What does Reiki feel like?
What happens during and after a session? And is it a problem if you feel nothing at all?
4 min read
This is the question people wonder about most, and the one that creates the most misplaced expectations. The short answer: everyone feels it differently, and no sensation is more “correct” than another.
Commonly reported sensations
- Heat in the body or hands — sometimes distinctly warm
- Tingling, a light electric sensation
- A cool breeze or a shiver
- Deep relaxation, a heaviness close to sleep
- Colours or shafts of light behind closed eyes
- A floating sensation, the edges of the body becoming vague
Emotions may surface
Reiki also stirs emotions that have been held down. During the session, or in the days after it, an unexpected sadness, anger or an unexplained urge to cry can arrive. This is not a fault — it is part of the clearing.
Memories or thoughts you believed forgotten may come up. Rather than wrestling with them, it is best to let them pass through.
What if I feel nothing?
That is entirely normal and quite common. Reiki working does not depend on you feeling it. Some people are simply less sensitive to bodily sensation than others; it does not mean they benefit less.
Very often the effect is noticed not immediately but in the days that follow: sleeping better, feeling less tense, responding to things more calmly.
After the session
You can expect to feel refreshed and more settled. Drinking plenty of water, avoiding heavy meals and giving yourself some space that day all help.
Reiki and energy work are complementary practices. They are not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or medication. Please consult your doctor for health concerns. Experiences vary from person to person.
