What is Reiki

Reiki and religion: is there a conflict?

Is Reiki a religion or a belief system? Can a religious person receive it? Direct answers to the hesitations I hear most often.

I hear this question a great deal and I find it completely understandable. The short answer: Reiki is not a religion, and it is not an alternative to any belief system.

Why it is not a religion

A religion has worship, scripture, a prophet, a congregation and a doctrine. Reiki has none of these. Reiki is a technique — a practice for restoring balance on the physical, mental and emotional level.

You do not need to believe anything to use Reiki. You may be sceptical; it works regardless. Equally, if you follow a faith, you are not asked to loosen that bond.

People of every faith

Millions of people practise Reiki around the world, and they come from very different cultures, societies and beliefs — Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and people of no religion at all.

In my experience Reiki does not weaken a person's relationship with their own faith; more often it does the opposite. As people make more room for their inner life, they tend to say they feel their own spiritual connection more clearly.

Where does the energy come from?

When you give Reiki you do not spend your own energy. You become a channel; the energy comes from a source beyond you and passes through. This is why giving Reiki does not tire you — the giver benefits too.

What you call that source is up to you. Some say God, some say universal life energy, some say nature itself. Reiki does not impose a definition — it leaves that to each person's own belief.

If you feel your faith is enough

You are quite right, and Reiki does not try to change that. Think of Reiki not as a search for belief but as a skill — like learning to swim, or knowing first aid. It does not alter what you believe; it puts a tool in your hands.

Reiki and energy work are complementary practices. They are not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or medication. Please consult your doctor for health concerns. Experiences vary from person to person.
