What is an attunement?
Why can't Reiki be learned from a book? What an attunement is, what it changes, and how long it lasts once received.

Knowledge about Reiki can be read in books, but the ability to work with Reiki cannot be acquired by reading. For that you need an attunement from a Reiki Master.
An attunement is a specific process that opens the channel between you and the universal energy. The capacity is already in all of us from birth; over time it becomes covered over by the weight of living. The attunement lifts that cover.
What happens during an attunement?
The Master places the symbols and the energy of the system being taught into the student's energy body. This can be done in person or at a distance — there is no difference in effect between the two.
All the student has to do is be somewhere quiet at the agreed time, open and willing. What matters is not how hard you try, but how much you allow.
Is it permanent?
Yes. Once received, an attunement stays with you for life. There is nothing to renew, no membership to pay and no organisation to belong to.
It does not fade if you don't use it, but the flow becomes easier and your confidence grows the more you do. That is why I suggest a short daily practice in the first months.
Why is a Master needed?
Because an attunement is something passed on; it cannot be obtained by reading. Think of lighting one candle from another — the candle is already there, all that is missing is the flame being passed across.
The person passing it on must themselves be attuned to every degree of that system and have learned the process from their own Master. This is why an open lineage matters.
Reiki and energy work are complementary practices. They are not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or medication. Please consult your doctor for health concerns. Experiences vary from person to person.
