How does distance Reiki work?

How can an attunement happen without being in the same room? The reasoning behind distance work, what you do during the session, and what you might feel.

This is the question I am asked most often. Distance is not an obstacle for energy, because what is being sent is not a physical substance but intention and connection. Think of a phone call: the distance between you does not determine the quality of the connection.

One of the symbols taught from the second level of Reiki onward exists precisely for this — directing energy to a specific person across time and place.

How the session goes

All that is needed is for both of us to be ready at the agreed time. There is no video call, no app and no internet connection required.

  • Set aside 30–45 minutes just before the agreed time.
  • Go to a quiet room where you won't be disturbed and turn your phone off.
  • Sit or lie down comfortably and close your eyes.
  • Say, silently or aloud, that you are ready to receive the attunement.
  • Then simply let go — there is nothing else you need to do.

What will you feel?

This varies a great deal from person to person. Warmth, tingling in the hands or body, a light breeze, or a shiver are all commonly reported. Some people see colours; others sink into a deep, sleep-like relaxation.

Feeling nothing at all is also completely normal and does not mean the attunement did not happen. Sensation is not the condition for it to work.

Most attunements take 20–30 minutes. When you sense it has finished, open your eyes slowly and take your time getting up.

Afterwards

Drink plenty of water and go easy on yourself for the rest of the day. A little light-headedness can occur; it usually passes quickly, and eating something helps.

The few weeks following an attunement are a clearing period. Eating well, sleeping enough and giving yourself a short daily Reiki treatment makes this time much easier.

Reiki and energy work are complementary practices. They are not a substitute for medical diagnosis, treatment or medication. Please consult your doctor for health concerns. Experiences vary from person to person.
