What is Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki means “Universal Life Energy” in Japanese. Here is a plain explanation of what it is, what it does, and what it does not do.

Reiki is made of two Japanese syllables: “Rei”, meaning universal, and “Ki”, meaning life energy. Together they describe the universal life energy — not something newly invented, but a name for the force that sustains every living thing.

In the late 1800s Dr Mikao Usui rediscovered a way to connect to this energy consciously and pass it on through the hands, founding the system known today as Usui Reiki.

What does Reiki do?

Reiki supports the body's own ability to restore balance. It does not force anything; it flows where it is needed. The effects people report most often are:

  • Deep relaxation and the release of tension
  • Better sleep and steadier energy through the day
  • Emotional weight easing, the mind growing quieter
  • Finding it easier to meditate and turn inward
  • Knowing yourself more clearly, intuition becoming sharper

What Reiki is not

Reiki is not a religion and not a belief system. It asks nothing of your faith; it works the same whether you believe in it or not. It does not impose a philosophy or a way of life.

Reiki is not medical treatment. It does not diagnose, it does not replace medication, and it is never a reason to stop treatment your doctor has prescribed. It is a complementary practice — it stands alongside care, not instead of it.

Reiki is not hypnosis. You stay fully conscious and in control, and you can stop at any moment.

Who can receive it?

Learning Reiki requires no special gift, no academic background and no particular faith. Once you have received the attunement, the ability stays with you for life, and it grows stronger the more you use it.

Being able to work on yourself as well as on others is one of the most valuable aspects of Reiki. If you are well, it helps you stay balanced; if you are struggling, it helps you find some ease.
